How to deal with harmful inheritances

An inheritance is something passed on to a person from a previous generation. On spiritual terms, an inheritance could be a blessing (healthy) or a curse (harmful). Nobody complains about the blessings that come from previous generations, in fact the bible says in Proverbs 13: 22A that "a good man leaveth an inheritance to his children's children... "Also, we all know and sing about the Abrahamic Blessing which we are all partakers of through faith in Christ Jesus.

The issue to be discussed today deals with the harmful inheritances which is popularly called "generational curses". Does it exist? Is it biblical? Yes.

Exodus 20 vs 5 "Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me."

Not forgetting this, that we (esp. our forefathers) who are now Christians were once gentiles and therefore were alienated from God and enemies of God.

I have been involved in various prayer sessions where prayer points centered on stopping generational curses. Today was no different. During an early morning prayer session in the men's prayer group I belong to - The Othniel Prayer Factory -, the subject came up again; this time however God gave us a promise of solution that made us rejoice with joy exceeding. Two prophets in the bible prophesied this promise, Jeremiah and Ezekiel:

Jeremiah 31: 29 - 30

In those days they shall say no more, the fathers have eaten a sour grape, and the children's teeth are set on edge. But everyone shall die for his own iniquity: every man that eateth the sour grape, his teeth shall be set on edge.

Ezekiel 18: 2 - 4

What mean ye, that ye use this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying, 'The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge? As I live, saith the Lord God, ye shall not have occasion any more to use this proverb in Israel. Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.

From these prophecies, God reversed and updated the previous verdict of visiting the iniquity of the fathers on generations to come. No more shall this be a point of contact, a chink in our armor for the enemy to accuse and assault. Each person bears the reward for the sin they commit. And if we find ourselves wanting 1John 1 verse 7b says "and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin".

Brethren, let us build our faith with this, and "...let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us...Heb 12 vs 1." Go for that job, marry that spouse, believe for the children, be confident that the Lord has stopped all generational curses in your life. Make sure you ask for restoration of what was lost from God, and gather the spoils.
